In September 2019, a group of family and friends sat around a dining room table to think of ways to better themselves, and possibly even the community. What spawned from that is the Bora Bunch. The name Bora was chosen because it means excellence in Swahili, and we wanted to make sure that everything we do is done with the spirit of excellence.
The Bora bunch originally consisted of two families, the Herrings and the Owens-Gray families. The Herrings are a couple with two young daughters and the Owens-Gray family has two young sons. Well, they are not really young anymore, but they will always be our babies.
In the beginning we decided to focus on three main topics: A healthy lifestyle, involvement in community politics, and investing for the future financially via the stock market. We visited local town halls, involved ourselves in challenges where we may have eaten healthier or committed to a healthy challenge for a few weeks at a time, and then we eventually started an LLC where we invested our money in the stock market.
Later we realize we could do more with more people. From 2020 to 2021, 4 new members joined the group. In 2021, we wanted to become more involved in the community and particularly with the youth. In February of 2021, we hosted our first annual Black History college bowl during the pandemic. The virtual Black History college bowl reached people from all over the country from Arizona to Chicago to North Carolina and of course the DMV. It was a success, and in 2022, we held the second virtual Black History college bowl.
In late 2022, we searched for other ways to become an agent of change in the area of education by forming a scholarship foundation. We drafted bylaws, elected board members and in May of 2023 the Bora Bunch Scholarship Foundation became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
